Masterclasses

The Netherlands Institute for Animation Film organises diverse masterclasses and workshops for their participants and others two or three times a year.
These masterclasses are primarily organised for the participants of the Ateliers. The professionals we contact and the subjects will be focussed on the needs of the participants at that time. However, these masterclasses are also accessible for other interested professionals. We will ask for a fee to attend these masterclasses. 12 > 15 September: Between Motion and Stillness
Stop motion masterclass by Suzie Templeton

In a four day master class Oscar winning animation director Suzie Templeton gives insight in her creative process and working methods. She presents the genesis of her films and focuses on the importance of stillness in animation. How to capture ones intentions and the characters in stop motion? She talks about the formation of PETER AND THE WOLF, how the score interacts with the narrative and animation. Sketches, original puppets and the films will illustrate the process.

Main part of the master class consists of animating puppets. Participants are invited to bring their own puppets to animate. Armatures for animating are available on request.

Suzie Templeton’s look inside her working process and the discussion of the participants work will form the ground for the practically oriented days to follow. Participants are emphatically invited to bring earlier works and work in progress to share and discuss.

Meet stop motion master Suzie Templeton and discuss your work and animate under her experienced and watchful eye.

Master classes 2012

 Master class Piotr Dumala

Master class Piotr Dumala, November 15 > 18, 2011
Polish animation master Piotr Dumala visited NIAf and tutored ten animation talents in a master class for the NIAf participants and attenders from outside. A master experienced in both, animation and live action, short and long, artistic and commercial work. His technique and style, etching in plaster boards proved to be suitable for his intentions to penetrate the ‘ultimate mystery’. That is what we do not understand, what has got no name. But his work is diverse and ranges from black humour to poetry and sometimes alienating and surreal. Dumala teaches animation, writes stories and in 2010 premiered his first feature live action film The Forest. Dumała boasts a number of animated film awards at the major animation film festivals worldwide. Some of his well-known animated shorts are A Nervous Life of Cosmos, Freedom of the Leg, Franz Kafka, Crime and Punishment. In the master class Dumala supervised the filmmakers in new and cutting-edge decisions. More photos of the workshop in the NIAF Facebook photo album.
